Real Life 50 First Dates: Girl Forgets Everything Every 24 Hours

If you have seen 50 First Dates, you would know that Drew Barrymore’s character got into a car accident and suffered brain damage that gave her severe  memory loss. Every day she had to be reminded of who her boyfriend was (Adam Sandler) and what had happened to her. She watches a movie every morning that re-introduces her to her everyday life.

How scary is that?

It was an interesting concept in the movie, but in real life it would be someone’s worst nightmare.

Sadly, this is reality for 19-year-old Jess Lydon. Her condition isn’t as bad as Drew Barrymore’s was, but it is still unfortunate.

Susac syndrome Jess Lydon

Jess Lydon suffers from Susac Syndrome

It is called Susac Syndrome and it only allows you to remember what happened in the last 24 hours. So instead of being trapped in the past, she is actually trapped in the present.

Susac Syndrome is so rare that it has only affected 250 people in the world. People who suffer from Susac Syndrome also suffer from other symptoms such as severe headaches and dizziness. The cause of this condition is unknown.

Jess Lydon forgets what she did the day before, what she ate the day before, and who she spoke to the day before. You may be thinking, “I forget stuff that I did a day earlier too!”

Well a lot of people do, but you can probably take a couple of minutes to think and finally remember your entire day. Jess simply cannot do that.

The worst part is that her boyfriend broke up with her because he could not handle her condition, but every morning she wakes up thinking that she is still with him. So every morning someone has to tell her that they are no longer together, and she is heartbroken over and over again.

Jess explained how this condition has drastically changed her life:  “My life is ruined and my memory has gone. I have no past — just the present.”

Her mom puts it perfectly: “Jess’s life has become a living nightmare.”

Simulated Zombie Apocalypse in Florida

Zombie Adventure

Zombie Adventure

Have you ever watched a zombie movie and said to yourself  “I kind of wish this happened in real life”?

No?

For some reason, I have this strange desire to participate and try to survive a zombie outbreak, real or fake. I know there are some other people out there that agree with me.

Imagine being able to have your weapons of choice, team of choice and a safe house or base while being attacked by waves of zombies?

Obviously we wouldn’t want this to happen in reality, but there is a place that offers a simulation of a zombie take-over.

In Kissimmee, Florida, there is an attraction called Zombie Adventure, and it is everything that a horror/zombie fan would ever want.

You show up with your team, gear up, grab your weapons, and start planning your strategy for survival.

For 2 hours, you roam around a 30 acre stretch of land with your team that is set up and staged perfectly. There is a crash site where the contamination started, a town, village, place to resupply, tunnel and so much more.

You use a military-style training rifle and non lethal ammo to hunt down zombies and rescue survivors in the night.

Zombie Adventure run from 630-1130 pm, and different adventures start every 15 minutes.

Critics have nothing but amazing reviews of this place.

Orlando Weekly said:

“Anyone who has ever wanted to live out a low-budget monster movie should enjoy the experience…I’m looking forward to coming back again next year…this could turn into a world-class horror attraction.”

Michael Roddy, a Halloween Horror Nights Creative Director, made it clear that this place was legit:

“I scare people for a living, and this event scared me…”

Zombieadventure.com gives you all the details you need to know to prepare for this adventure.

This should help you visualize the experience (I could not find any action shots).

“Zombie Adventure is a Total Immersion Action Adventure TM.  You are not being herded through a somewhat scary maze; you are led onto a 12.5-acre outdoor stage of darkness that is filled with zombies.  Those noises that you will hear are not a soundtrack, it’s the sound of chaos and it’s headed your way. We have expanded the show this year with a bunch of new stuff: new scenes, more zombies, more close-contact scares, and most notably – you are not separated from the zombies by any barriers.  This means that as you move through the terrain, you may walk right up on a zombie (or maybe it really means that a zombie will creep up on you).

This is not a “shooting gallery”; this is your primal instinct to survive.
While our goal is to scare the crap out of you, safety is never sacrificed.  It will be dark. It will be creepy.  If you come back (that’s if you actually make it back) and say “I almost had a heart attack”, we’re just gonna smile because that’s our job.

This is intended to be a scary event.
Your adventure begins with a military-style briefing. The situation begins to unfold right in front of your eyes. Your team leader will guide your squad (about 20 or so people) on a 7/10ths of a mile trek through a 12.5 acre, dark and densely wooded stage. You are on a mission to save the World and to do it you must get to the laboratory to rescue the survivors. This is like any zombie video game or movie you’ve ever played or watched – only this time you are totally immersed in the action. Along the way you will encounter zombies. Now, you’ve got a weapon (paintball gear) and the zombies don’t. You know what that means – it’s a bad day to be a zombie. You are going to shoot those zombies in the head. During your adventure, you will blast you way through zombie infested woods, save the day, get the girl and ride off into the sunset (wait, I got a little ahead of myself here – sorry – the sun set a long time ago – it’s really dark here – no, I mean DARK out here).

The Cake Don – Making Cakes You Can’t Refuse

ZazenLife was lucky to meet and interview one of the most talented up and coming custom cake designers.

The Cake Don

The Cake Don

Don Donneruno is a custom cake designer, but some have been known to call him a conceptual engineer.

His cakes have a look and attitude all their own. Don draws upon an eclectic sphere of influences such as Salvador Dali, Muhammad Ali, Evil Knevil, Jack Kirby, Tim Burton, Jimmy Page, Pablo Picasso, Elvis Presley, Todd McFarlane, Andy Warhol and an endless list of others.

The primary creative force in his work is his experiences growing up in New York City. Taking the 7 train from Flushing Queens to Manhattan as a teenager was a crash course in pop culture, and he absorbed it all.

During the interview, he explained that his exposure to and participation in the Graffiti movement of the early 80’s laid the groundwork for the foundation of what would become his artistic style, is figuring out how to construct the cake and what materials to use. “Broken down to simplest form it is me doing an art project for school,” he said.

“The way I approach it is that I have to make a model of King Tut for social studies class, the fact that there is cake inside doesn’t matter, it’s styrofoam and clay, or it is cake and fondant, it’s the same consistency.”

Donneruno’s enthusiasm for the business and being able to share his artwork with others shows in his face, in his tone of voice, and in his final product.

His cakes are so detailed and done to perfection that they almost look real.

The Cake Don is a partnership between baker Meredith Gulfman and Northport conceptual engineer and artist Don Donneruno. They say their passion for delivering a cake that fulfills the customer’s every desire is what drives them, whether that desire is a Louis Vuitton handbag or a Play Station 3 game.

I was lucky enough to taste one of these amazing cakes, and yes, they taste just as good as they look.

What amazed me the most was how realistic and detailed these cakes are while being completely edible.
